MADISON, Wis. — The Madison community is mourning the loss of Michael Johnson, the longtime president and chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, whose death at age 50 was confirmed Monday by organization officials.
Johnson was widely regarded as one of the region’s most influential youth advocates, dedicating much of his career to expanding opportunities for young people and strengthening community support systems throughout Dane County.
Since becoming president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County in 2010, Johnson led the organization through a period of significant growth, increasing its reach and expanding programs designed to support children, teenagers, and families across the region. His leadership helped position the organization as a cornerstone of youth development in southern Wisconsin.
Although he briefly left the organization in 2018 to serve as chief executive officer of United Way of Cincinnati, Johnson later returned to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, continuing the work that had become synonymous with his name. His return proved especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he helped guide the organization through unprecedented challenges while ensuring that vital services remained available to the communities that depended on them.
In a statement following his passing, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County spokesperson Ginny Rico acknowledged the profound loss felt throughout the organization.
“While we mourn this loss, our organization remains strong, focused, and committed to continuing the important work Michael helped lead,” Rico said. She noted that the organization has established plans to maintain stability and continuity during the leadership transition.
The organization also announced that former Chief Education and People Officer Taylor Jackson will serve as interim president and CEO.
Beyond his work with the Boys & Girls Clubs, Johnson became a respected voice in Madison’s civic and nonprofit communities. He was known for his passionate advocacy on behalf of young people, his commitment to educational opportunities, and his belief that every child deserved the chance to succeed regardless of circumstance.
Community leaders were quick to honor Johnson’s legacy following news of his death.
Dane County Executive Melissa Agard praised his enduring impact on the region’s youth, saying, “His unwavering commitment to the youth of Dane County will continue to have an impact for generations to come.” Agard added that Johnson’s passion and dedication were evident to everyone who had the opportunity to work alongside him.
Friends, colleagues, and former program participants have also shared tributes remembering Johnson as a compassionate leader, mentor, and champion for young people. Many credited him with helping transform lives through his vision, encouragement, and tireless commitment to service.
As the community reflects on his life and contributions, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County has indicated that memorial information and opportunities to honor Johnson’s legacy will be announced in the coming days.
Michael Johnson leaves behind a lasting legacy of leadership, service, and advocacy. His work helped shape the futures of countless young people throughout Dane County, ensuring that his influence will continue to be felt for years to come.
