WHITAKERS, N.C. — Family, friends, and members of the Whitakers community are mourning the tragic loss of two men following a deadly shooting incident on Saturday morning, June 13, 2026.
According to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 9:55 a.m. to reports of gunfire at the Dollar General located at 211 S. White Street in Whitakers. Authorities said a heated altercation outside the store escalated into an exchange of gunfire, resulting in a fatal incident involving two individuals.
Investigators confirmed that Herbert Earl Lawrence Jr. was found suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene and was pronounced dead despite emergency response efforts.
A second victim, Wilbert Silver III, was located nearby at the intersection of Nash and White Streets. He was transported for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities believe both men were involved in the confrontation that led to the exchange of gunfire. The Nash County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what triggered the altercation.
No additional details have been released as detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
