The Delaware community and aviation community are mourning the loss of Kurt W. Paulus, 76, of Delaware, Ohio, who died following a plane crash in Scioto County on Thursday morning.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Paulus was piloting a 2006 Cirrus SR-20 single-engine aircraft that had recently departed from Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport. Preliminary reports indicate that during the aircraft’s initial climb after takeoff, it crashed into a residence located along Bennett School House Road in Harrison Township.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene; however, Paulus sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased as a result of the crash. Authorities confirmed that he was the sole occupant of the aircraft and was reportedly en route to Delaware, Ohio, at the time of the incident.

The impact of the crash sparked a fire that destroyed the residence involved. Fortunately, the two occupants inside the home were able to escape safely and did not suffer physical injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are continuing to examine the incident to determine the cause of the accident.
