According to a statement released by the department, Officer Cotton was involved in what authorities have described as an accidental ATV crash while off duty. The specific location and circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been released, as the investigation remains ongoing.

Officer Cotton served with the Rocky Mount Police Department for seven years and was widely respected by colleagues and members of the community. Prior to his law enforcement career, he served in the U.S. military and Army Reserve, reflecting a long-standing commitment to public service.

In 2023, he joined the department’s K-9 Unit, where he worked alongside trained police dogs in support of law enforcement operations. More recently, he completed training with his second K-9 partner, Leo, an explosives-detection dog. The department also recognized him as its first African American K-9 handler, marking a notable milestone in agency history.

In an official tribute, the department stated, “Officer Cotton was more than a colleague; he was family,” underscoring the close bonds he formed during his service.
