FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — A Castle Hills couple known for their community involvement and charitable work died Friday in a crash that shut down part of Interstate 10 in Fayette County, according to officials and community leaders.
The victims were identified as Carlos Mugica and his wife, Jenn Mugica, longtime residents of Castle Hills. The fatal collision occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the 667-mile marker.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a major accident and assisted the Texas Department of Public Safety, Flatonia Fire Department, and Fayette County EMS at the scene. Westbound lanes were closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to investigate the crash and clear the roadway before traffic resumed.
Castle Hills Mayor J.R. Treviño confirmed the couple’s deaths and issued a statement honoring their contributions to the community.
“Their kindness, generosity, and commitment to our community left a lasting impact on all who knew them,” Treviño said.
Carlos and Jenn Mugica were widely known for their involvement in local events and charitable organizations, including Fiesta celebrations and the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation. Friends and community members described them as active, generous, and deeply engaged in supporting civic life in the region.
News of their passing prompted an outpouring of condolences across social media, where many shared memories and reflected on the couple’s warmth and positive influence within Castle Hills.
As of Saturday, the Texas Department of Public Safety has not released a full crash report or additional details regarding the cause of the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
