WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A late-night two-vehicle collision early Saturday morning claimed the life of a man and left another person injured in Westmoreland County, according to authorities.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of Route 66 and Mamont Drive in Washington Township following reports of a serious crash. Upon arrival, crews discovered significant damage to both vehicles involved, including a pickup truck with heavy front-end damage and a white sedan that had left the roadway and come to rest down a hillside.
The Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office identified the driver of the sedan as Nicholas R. Grzybek of Apollo, Pennsylvania.
Investigators said Grzybek was traveling northbound on Route 66 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle crossed the center line near Mamont Drive and entered the southbound lane. The sedan then collided head-on with a Nissan pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.
Authorities confirmed that Grzybek suffered fatal blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck survived the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials have not released further details regarding the extent of those injuries.
Drone footage from the scene showed both vehicles heavily damaged and positioned off the roadway, underscoring the severity of the impact.
Multiple agencies responded to assist, including local fire departments, Pennsylvania State Police, PennDOT, Murrysville Medic 1, and the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office. The Washington Township Police Department is leading the investigation.
Authorities say they are continuing to examine what caused the sedan to cross into oncoming traffic as they work to determine all contributing factors in the crash.
