PLANT CITY, Fla. — A fatal collision involving a motorcycle and pickup truck in eastern Hillsborough County has resulted in the death of a motorcyclist and the arrest of a Mulberry man on DUI manslaughter charges, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. on June 12 along State Road 60 near Clarence Gordon Jr. Road in the Plant City area.

Investigators said Ryon Hartwig was traveling westbound on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when a GMC Sierra entered the roadway from a private driveway and crossed into the motorcycle’s path. According to troopers, the pickup truck collided with the motorcycle, causing catastrophic injuries to Hartwig.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Hartwig was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the GMC Sierra, identified as 59-year-old Santiago Ruiz Rangel of Mulberry, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Following the investigation, authorities arrested Rangel and charged him with DUI Manslaughter.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Rangel’s blood alcohol concentration measured 0.170, more than twice Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.

After his arrest, Rangel was transported to the Hillsborough County Jail, where he was booked pending further legal proceedings.

Troopers reported that preliminary evidence indicates the pickup truck entered State Road 60 directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle, leaving Hartwig with little opportunity to avoid the collision. Investigators continue to examine evidence, review witness statements, and reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.

State Road 60 serves as a major transportation corridor across central Florida and has been the site of numerous serious traffic collisions in recent years.

Authorities have not released information regarding any additional contributing factors beyond impairment and the vehicle’s entry from the private driveway.

The Florida Highway Patrol stated that the investigation remains ongoing and that the case will be forwarded for prosecutorial review as criminal proceedings move forward.

As family members, friends, and community members mourn the loss of Ryon Hartwig, the tragedy serves as another reminder of the devastating consequences impaired driving can have on individuals, families, and entire communities.
